Uscendo Leaving
Potenza Picena for the sea or the districts of S. Girio and Montecanepino,
there are country roads from where you can admire the typical scenery
of the Macerata countryside. Hills of different heights, sloping towards
the sea and carefully farmed with different crops, offer visitors a
myriad of shapes and colours in every season. This extremely relaxing
environment is perfect for your photographs.
Villa Buonaccorsi
Villa Buonaccorsi can be found a few miles from Potenza Picena, towards
the sea. Its origins are 16th century but it was subsequently enlarged
and restored between 1745 and 1750 by the architect Pietro Bernasconi,
from the Luigi Vanvitelli school. Other buildings, storehouses, the
mill and stables were added in the 18th and 19th centuries. Originally
the purpose of the villa was to control the agricultural land of the
Buonaccorsi family. The whole complex spreads over more than 5 hectares
and, apart from the actual villa, there is a really unique Italian garden.
The rooms of the villa are decorated by various 18th century artists,
while in the closed courtyard there are four statues depicting the seasons
which are attributed to the Venetian sculptor Giovanni Bonazza, from
the early part of the 18th century. To the south east there is a beautiful
garden, divided into five terraces, joined by a central stairway and
protected by a thick copse. There are rare plants, fountains, water
features, niches, obelisks and many statues of the Venetian school depicting
people and grotesque and mythological beings. There is also a small
puppet theatre and a small church. North of the villa is Palazzo Rosso,
a kind of stronghold, belonging to the |

Massucci family, which then later became property of the Marefoschi
family. The 18th century building was partly restructured in 1855.
The districts:
- Montecanepino The village of Montecanepino rises on a hill
along the road connecting Potenza Picena and Porto Potenza Picena. It
is this vicinity to the coast and the gentleness of the hills that make
this the ideal place for anyone looking for peace and quiet. This small
village maybe dates from the medieval era, but the name probably derives
from the word "canepini", that is ropemakers or workers of hemp, once
numerous in this area. Many people visit Montecanepino on Easter Monday
for the festival of San Vincenzo Ferreri, one of the most ancient festivals
of the area, during which important events of the past are relived with
traditional rural games.
- San Girio The village of S. Girio is along the road
connecting Potenza Picena and the "Regina" road. There is an abundance
of trees and the surrounding countryside is very beautiful and serene.
Here you can find the Sanctuary of S. Girio, one of the most special
religious places for the people of Potenza Picena. This Sanctuary, probably
built in 1298 on the tomb of the saint, was rebuilt in 1560 and restructured
in the first part of this century. It houses frescoes depicting the
life of the saint and a canvas depicting “S. Girio”, from 1791. Many
visitors come to the Sanctuary on the 25th May of each year for the
festival of the Saint. Not far from here, near the sea, there are several
large areas of brackish water, which with their particular characteristics,
are a real natural oasis.
